Album Review
: |
When Avril
first burst
onto the
music scene
she let fly
with ‘Let’s
Go’ and
upbeat
teenage
innocence
style full
of energy
album which
everybody
loved. Then
she brought
out let’s go
a more
grungy rock
album that
nobody liked
– or so must
of the
reviews
floating
around out
there would
have you
believe.
There seems
to be a war
between
critics and
real people.
Critics like
one thing
and slate
the other,
real people
like the
other and
don’t like
the one
thing. But I
really fail
to see why
that is. I
am not that
much of a
bad critic
am I? What
most critics
don’t like I
do for some
reason, and
Under My
Skin is one
of them.
I was never
really much
of an Avril
fan. Sure
the odd
chord or
lyric was
good but
generally
her overall
songs did
nothing for
me and I
wasn’t about
to buy into
Avril being
anything
more than
generic pop.
So I found
it
surprising
that I have
listed to
Under My
Skin at
least once
per day for
the last
week.
The album is
very good.
The songs
are catchy,
the quality
is good and
the music is
enjoyable.
But that has
little to do
with the Emo
Today rating
system so
let’s bring
in all the
complex
terminology.
Stickyness
is good,
there are
plenty of
songs on the
album you
will find
stuck inside
you head.
The album
has a great
feel to it
there are no
songs that I
don’t
particularly
like. As for
life, I
haven’t
really been
listening to
it for that
long but
normally
your lust to
listen dies
quite
quickly if
you are
constantly
listening to
it, I still
like it so I
am going to
give that
thumbs up
too.
I will admit
it isn’t the
bubbly
free-for-all
of Let’s Go
but that is
the reason I
like it. And
if that is
why you
listen to
Avril there
are songs
such as
Freak Out
and I Always
Get What I
want (it’s a
bonus track
on the
imported
version,
well worth
getting
because I
love the
track).
Avril has
defiantly
changed and
grown up
since her
first album
– for the
better. |
